Kunsthalle Emden — Anniversary Exhibition

For the Kunsthalle’s 40th anniversary, the exhibition design transforms the spaces into a place of collective celebration. The institution’s existing furniture, museum benches, display cases, chairs, standing tables, and beer-garden benches, is dressed up for the anniversary party.
Skirtings bring the different pieces of furniture together into a shared festive appearance. Reflective surfaces draw attention to a distinctive feature of the Kunsthalle: its various ceilings, which tell the story of the building’s different phases of onstruction.
The anniversary programme extends from the atrium into the exhibition spaces. Events, readings, and dinners take place among the artworks, bringing the celebration into the exhibition itself. A stage, a large communal table, and an activity space for hildren turn the galleries into places for gathering and exchange. Love-letter stations in every room invite visitors to write to individual works of art, creating another form of encounter between the audience and the exhibition.
Beyond simply creating a festive setting in the conventional sense, the exhibition design brings furniture, artworks, spaces, and visitors together as part of a shared celebration of the Kunsthalle’s 40th anniversary.
